SUMMER FAIR SUCCESS
Thu 20 Jul 2017Our Summer Fair – the first event organised by the new PTA – was a fantastic success raising £866 for the benefit of BLIS pupils.
The PTA, which has only been together since the end of March, was determined to organise an event before the end of term.
Their hard work and enthusiasm paid off and the Summer Fair was very well attended by BLIS families, relatives and friends.
Stalls and sideshows included Guess the Name of the Lion; Toiletries & Gifts; Books & DVDs; Soft Toy Tombola, Face Painting, Bottle & Tin Tombola; Bouncing Castle and Test Your Strength.
Everyone agreed it was a very enjoyable event for the school and wider community.
A big thank you to all the organisers, helpers on the day and people who came along on the afternoon.

STAYING SAFE AROUND TRUCKS
Tue 18 Jul 2017Year 2 pupils learned about the dangers posed by large vehicles on the road and how to stay safe around trucks.
Two demonstrators from the DHL Trucks and Child Safety (TACS) programme visited the school with a 44 tonne articulated lorry to deliver the training.
Stephen De Bruyne and Neville Carbine are experienced drivers. The potentially lifesaving information they gave pupils included:
- What drivers can and cannot see in their mirrors
- How to walk safely around a vehicle
- What and where are a truck’s blind spots.
These are important key messages which the TACS programme – funded by the DHL UK Foundation – hope will help prevent some of over 450 accidents involving trucks in which children are killed or injured each year.
Head teacher Andrew Moorcroft says: “Education is not just about the 3Rs. Learning how to be safe in all aspects of life is just as important and, as a school, we are keen to give our pupils the opportunity to take part in programmes like this.”
“Giving children the chance to get close to an articulated lorry is a very powerful way of showing them how potentially dangerous the vehicles can be.”

SPORTSMANSHIP AT SPORTS DAY
Mon 03 Jul 2017It was a win for the green team at Sports Day, which went ahead on the reserve date after rain forced the original event to be cancelled earlier in the week.
The school field was packed with spectators following the children around the various activities they were competing in. These ranged from egg & spoon and sack races to hurdle relay and up ‘n over hoops.
Members of the green team won a total of 27 points followed by yellow with 19, white with 11 and blue with 7.
There were loud cheers at the end of the event when Head teacher Mr Moorcroft announced the winners and presented them with the sports day cup.
In assembly the next morning, he congratulated all pupils on the sportsmanship they showed at sports day.
“It was fantastic to see the way you all took part and did your best. You showed fantastic determination and excellent sportsmanship,” he said.
There was a special mention for the blue team for “not fussing or sulking” about coming fourth.
Mr Moorcroft said : “You were not sore losers and showed real sportsmanship. I was really proud of you.”
He then announced that they had been chosen as “Team of the Week” for their attitude.
