Geography

Subject Leader - Mrs Jopling

Intent

Our aim when teaching geography is to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and people within it, and to promote the children's interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. We want our pupils to discover more about their locality, country and the world around them through questioning, research, discussion and fieldwork. We want them to learn and use subject specific vocabulary in order to express their thinking, knowledge and ideas. We utilise the outdoor environment to aid fieldwork skills and enhance and deepen geographical knowledge and understanding. Our children learn, at an age-appropriate level, about current affairs relating to people and places and environmental concerns. We want our children to consider what can be done to influence change for the better and how we as citizens can help.

Implementation

  • Our Geography Curriculum is planned for in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the National Curriculum.
  • It contains clear and comprehensive, thematic topic work, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on progressively and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
  • When planning lessons, teachers draw upon their long-term plan, knowledge and progression grids, children’s prior learning, understanding, skills and needs.
  • Lesson content and tasks are designed to provide appropriate challenge to all learners, in line with our commitment to inclusion. It is important that children develop the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject.
  • The school environment and local area is utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom. Visitors to school, school trips and fieldwork are planned to give first-hand experiences which enhance children's understanding of the world, including and beyond their locality.

Impact

During their time at Boughton Leigh Infant School our pupils will be able to demonstrate their progression of knowledge and skills through their communications and work produced. Care is taken to assess children’s learning and progress in a range of ways to ensure that each child is able to move forward in their learning journey.
