Computing

Subject Leader - Mrs Oldham

Intent

We want our pupils to be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

We strive for our pupils to be provided with opportunities to develop computational thinking analytically to solve problems and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation. We strive for pupils to have a good understanding of how to use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private and identifying where to go for help and support when they have concerns.

Implementation

Clear and comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. The Computing curriculum is planned for and covered in full within the EYFS and KS1 school curriculum and is planned for and delivered through the Rising Stars Switched on Computing Scheme.

  • Delivery of Computing strands with clear configuration.
  • Delivery of each concept emphasising collaboration, problem solving and development of computational thinking.
  • A range of knowledge and skills will be taught ensuring that children are aware of e-safety and strategies to keep themselves safe when online.
  • Children will be taught to recognise responsibilities when online and how to treat others appropriately.
  • Development of cross curricular links to underpin learning in multiple areas across the curriculum giving the children opportunities to learn life skills and apply skills to ‘hands on’ situations in a purposeful context.
  • Independent learning: In Computing children may well be asked to solve problems and develop their learning independently. This allows the children to have ownership over their curriculum and lead their own learning.
  • Collaborative learning: In Computing children may well be asked to work as part of a team learning to support and help one another towards a challenging, yet rewarding goal.

Impact

Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in using communication and information technologies and computing that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum. At Boughton Leigh Infant School, we want our children to be confident and creative when using technology. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to grow up wanting to be Engineers, Scientists, Programmers, Games Designers, and to understand that Computing is the foundation to many careers and communication in our rapidly changing world. Our Computing curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be able to experiment, collaborate and evaluate. As pupils progress, they should gain a deeper understanding of how Computing contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our world. We want to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of Computing Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
