Intent
We aim to provide essential opportunities for all our children to create, play, and enjoy sport and PE. We want pupils to experience games, dance, gymnastics and athletics both with the class teacher and professional sports coaches. We strive for pupils to receive a wide range of inspirational opportunities to promote the fun that sport, exercise and being healthy can bring.
Implementation
At Boughton Leigh we follow the Real PE scheme. This scheme of work develops the key abilities children need to be successful within PE and Sport and across the curriculum through six key cogs: Creative, Cognitive, Health and Fitness, Personal, Physical and Social. All pupils are included in P.E. lessons with high activity levels. Teaching is from class teachers and specialist coaches, producing high levels of engagement from all pupils. Pupils are working at different and appropriate levels, with interventions personalised to challenge and support all groups. Effective and timely review of learning by teachers and pupils is an integral part of all lessons. The Real PE curriculum is both ambitious and progressively designed to give all pupils the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for future learning and life. Children are able to engage in a variety of competitive activities (both against self and others) and cooperative physical activities in a range of increasingly challenging situations. A range of sports clubs are also offered to all children after school including Tae Kwan Do, street dance, hockey, cricket, basketball and cheerleading. Children are encouraged to stay active at break and lunch times with sports coaches and midday supervisors organising active games but children can also access a variety of equipment to use independently.
Impact
We know active, healthy children achieve more. Real P.E. supported the philosophy of our School, developing the whole child and ensuring every pupil felt included, challenged and supported. The programme of training and materials enables all teachers and coaches to deliver exciting and engaging lessons for all children. It was essential for us that we could demonstrate and evidence clear impact of learning and positive behaviours and make the very best sustainable use of our sports premium spend. We believe we can create an environment in PE where young people feel included, valued, challenged and supported to achieve their maximum potential, in school and in life. Our PE curriculum philosophy and approach helps ALL children develop the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, sport and life. It places the learner at the heart of practice with the ultimate goal of transforming how we teach PE, applying all of the high-quality learning and teaching skills that have become the norm in other subjects. Pupils develop fundamental movement skills, becoming increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination, individually and with others. Consistent praise of positive behaviours means pupils have highly positive experiences in the subject and consequently want and expect to do well.
