Art
Subject Leader – Mrs Green
Intent
We want our pupils to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Engaging in the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, modelling, designing, 3D techniques and digital art. We aim for them to express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner. We strive to introduce children to a wide range of work, styles and artists reflecting historical art and the wide spectrum of art in society today.
Implementation
Clear and comprehensive thematic topic work in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the National Curriculum. The Art and Design Curriculum is planned for and covered in full within the EYFS and KS1 school curriculum.
- Throughout their Boughton Leigh Infant school journey, every child is given the opportunity to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and digital art. Opportunities are offered to enhance these knowledge and skills through the exploration of key artists or craft makers.
- Art and Design focussed displays in every classroom alongside celebrating the outstanding three-dimensional creations on display throughout the school. These displays celebrate exceptional practice and exemplify terminology and vocabulary used.
- Pupils will develop aesthetic sensibilities to make judgements about Art.
- Pupil’s will develop powers of observation and there will be encouragement for the use of imagination and original thought.
- We will provide opportunities to learn about Art and Design in the world in which we live.
- Pupils will develop the ability to communicate ideas, opinions and feelings about their own work and that of others.
- We will encourage children to be able to respond knowledgeably to the work of other craftspeople, knowing that there are different kinds of art made for different purposes.
- Boughton Leigh pupils will acquire a range of different knowledge and skills using different media as they progress through the school.
Impact
Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in Art and Design that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum. At Boughton Leigh Infant School, we want our children to love art, craft and design! We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to grow up wanting to be illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, curators, architects or printmakers. Our Art curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As pupils progress, they should gain a deeper understanding of how Art and Design reflects and shapes our history, and how it contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our world. We want to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the Art and Design National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. We want our children to use the local area as inspiration, to learn from other cultures and to respect diversity. To that end, we have carefully selected a wide range of unique and diverse artists, craft makers and designers for children to begin to explore.
