Supporting Phonics and Reading at Home
Reading at home
We expect our children to be reading at home at least 3 times a week. Children on the RWI Program take home a black and white copy of the book they have been reading in class and also a matching RWI book bag book. Once children have finished RWI they take home short chapter books that match their reading level. All children also take home a book from the Library Bus to share with their parents/carers. We celebrate reading at home by awarding ‘Reading Certificates’ for every 25 reads. The number of reads is recorded by Parents/Carers in their child’s Reading Log.
Practising sounds at home
Your child will be given sound cards for the set they are on from school. If you require another pack then please speak to your class teacher. Please practise these at home with your child and if they are unsure of the sound then please turn the card over so they can see the picture cue. To support you with how to pronounce the sounds please watch the video below.
Phonics Workshops for Parents!
We are holding a Parents Workshop to give information and support on the Year Phonics Screening Check on Tuesday March 8th. More information on this will be emailed out to our Year One Parents.
