OPAL (Outdoor Play And Learning)
At Boughton Leigh Infant School we believe that play is an essential part of every child’s development and wellbeing. Through our Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme, we have transformed our playtimes into rich, creative, and inclusive experiences that support children’s physical, social, and emotional growth.
The OPAL Programme helps us to make the very best use of all our outdoor spaces, in all weathers and throughout the year. With a focus on creativity, imagination, and adventure, children are encouraged to explore, take manageable risks, and develop independence and resilience. From den building and loose-parts play to imaginative role-play and active games, every child can find something that inspires them.
Since introducing OPAL, we’ve seen happier, more active playtimes, improved social interactions, and greater cooperation between children of all ages. Play is no longer just a break from learning, it’s an integral part of our school day that supports confidence, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Our commitment to outdoor play reflects our belief that happy children learn best. Through OPAL, we are giving our pupils the freedom, space, and encouragement to explore, create, and thrive, building not only memories but skills for life.
