Operation Encompass

Our School is an Operation Encompass School

The safety and wellbeing of our children is at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to be an Operation Encompass school, working in partnership with Warwickshire Police and Warwickshire County Council to support children who may be affected by domestic abuse.

What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is a national safeguarding initiative that enables schools and early years settings to provide timely support to children who have experienced or been exposed to domestic abuse. It is based on the principle that children can be significantly affected by domestic abuse, even if they do not directly witness an incident.

Through Operation Encompass, information is shared between the police and a school's trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) so that appropriate support can be provided as quickly as possible.

How Does It Work?

Following a police-attended domestic abuse incident where a child is involved, present, or connected to the household, Warwickshire Police will send a confidential notification to the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead before the start of the next school day.

The notification does not include detailed information about the incident. Instead, it alerts the school that a child may have experienced a difficult situation and may require additional understanding, care, or support during the school day.

How Will School Support My Child?

Once a notification is received, our safeguarding team will consider the most appropriate support for the child. This may include:

  • A warm and supportive welcome at the start of the day
  • Additional emotional support from trusted adults
  • Opportunities to talk if the child wishes to do so
  • Flexibility and understanding around learning and behaviour
  • Ongoing pastoral support where appropriate

Any support provided will be tailored to the individual needs of the child and handled sensitively and confidentially.

Why is Operation Encompass important?

Research shows that experiencing domestic abuse can have a significant impact on a child's emotional wellbeing, behaviour, relationships, and learning. Operation Encompass helps schools respond quickly and appropriately, ensuring children receive the support they need when they need it most. Domestic abuse is recognised as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), and early intervention can make a positive difference to a child's wellbeing and outcomes.
