Intent

We want our pupils to develop their knowledge and skills of different religious beliefs and worldviews, in order to prepare them for life in a modern, diverse Britain. Pupils should be able to make informed choices about how they want to live their lives, whilst understanding more about the faith of other people that they meet.

Implementation

At Boughton Leigh we follow the agreed syllabus for Religious Education (SACRE) for Coventry and Warwickshire, taught through Jigsaw's R.E scheme. Objectives are planned carefully to ensure progression of skills and knowledge across school. Lessons are taught weekly, interspersed with acknowledging different religious festivals and significant days through assemblies, themed days and in-class conversations. Learning is built on children's prior knowledge and encourages children to share their religious beliefs and experiences. Children are encouraged to ask questions and express preferences. Parents have a right to request the withdrawal of their child from RE if they feel strongly opposed to the lessons planned, which teachers will happily share with them if requested.

Impact

The impact of the curriculum, that we deliver, aims for the children to be exposed to and to have an increased understanding of different religions and cultural practices so that they know about and understand a range of religions. They are then able to articulate their own beliefs, values and obligations clearly in order to explain why they may be important in their own and other people’s lives. We want pupils to develop their levels of religious understanding and express, with confidence, their ideas about religion and then to change their minds, if they choose to do so.
