    Fri 09 Mar 2018

Mothers, grandmothers and mother figures joined children in their classrooms for a family learning event.

They worked together to make paper flowers for Mother's Day. This involved watching a demonstration, following instructions, folding and cutting paper and lots of tricky cutting out and gluing.

Everyone agreed the flowers were "blooming lovely" and they will, no doubt, have pride of place at home this Mothering Sunday.

  • VOTE FOR US AT TESCO

    Thu 15 Feb 2018

We have been successful in applying for a grant from the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme.

From 1st March to 30th April our school will be one of the three causes that customers can vote for using the blue tokens available at check outs in the four Rugby stores:

    • Leicester Road superstore
    • Helvellyn Way express store
    • Cattlemarket express store (near the station)
    • Bilton express store (on Main Street)
    •

If you buy anything in these stores during March and April you are entitled to a token – even if you don’t buy a bag. So please ask for a token if you are not given one and help us raise as much as we can.

The project with the highest number of votes gets £4,000, the second placed £2,000 and the third placed £1,000.

  • SAFER INTERNET DAY 2018

    Thu 15 Feb 2018

Online Safety Advisor for Warwickshire, Sarah Fitzgerald visited school on Safer Internet Day to talk to parents and staff about keeping children safe online.

During her thought provoking presentation she talked about the inappropriate content of apps, websites and games that many children are able to access and how vital it is to ensure that all devices used by children have safety settings in place which are regularly updated.

According to recent research highlighted by Sarah:

    • 73% of 6 months to 4 year old children use a computer, tablet or laptop.
    • 29% of 6 months to 4 year old children have their own device
    • By 4 years of age most youngsters are self-sufficient on a tablet/laptop or computer.
    •

To help keep youngsters safe online she recommended the following websites which give parents and carers age specific advice and allow you to check the content of games, apps and websites aimed at children:

We also held a special assembly on Safer Internet Day during which pupils were shown this year’s campaign film. This reminded them about not sharing personal information online, telling an adult if they don’t like what they see online and getting it blocked and always being kind online. They were reminded of our school online safety motto: ZIP IT-BLOCK IT-FLAG IT.

  • READ ALOUD

    Thu 15 Feb 2018

During February some of the pupils on our Reading Recovery programme are taking part in a national initiative which celebrates their achievements in literacy.

They are reading aloud to a person who is important to them for five to ten minutes to show how much their reading has improved.

Thank you to parents/carers who have come to school to listen to their child read during their lesson with Mrs Graham. It is a fantastic way of celebrating their achievements. Paige (Y1) read to her Mum and Alex (Y1) read to his Nan.

  • KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE

    Fri 02 Feb 2018

Are you confident that the privacy settings on the device used by your child have been set properly? Is your child safe online? How do you monitor the websites your child is looking at?

These are just three questions that will be answered by IT specialist Sarah Fitzgerald when she visits school next Tuesday 6th February to give a Safer Internet Day talk to BLIS parents, carers, family and friends.

With reports of children’s Apps being hacked in the national news recently, as well as the ongoing worry of cyber bullying and grooming, understanding how to be safe online is a vital skill we all need.

Our school believes that internet safety education is a crucial element of the curriculum and an essential part of young people’s development. This session will help you be more aware of the safety messages the children receive in school so that you can reinforce them at home.

Spending an hour listening to information and advice from Sarah will help protect your child and put your mind at rest.

The session starts at 2.15 pm and will take place in the school hall. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served.

  • ASTRONOMY EVENING ON SUPER BLUE MOON NIGHT

    Thu 01 Feb 2018

On the night the super blue moon appeared in the sky over Rugby we held our second Astronomy Evening.

Head of Science Mrs Swan says: “What could be more inspirational for our budding astronomers than witnessing this rare lunar phenomenon ? Our school believes in instilling a life-long love of learning in pupils and provoking their interest in all subjects and this was the perfect night to get them interested in astronomy.”

Members of Rugby & District Astronomical Society were at school to explain the wonders of the universe and demonstrate how to use telescopes to view the night sky.

Meanwhile indoors the activities on offer included naming the phases of the moon using biscuits, doing astronaut experiments, using an IPad app to explore the night sky and finding out about star constellations.
