  • GRANDPARENTS' GARDENING AFTERNOON

    Thu 30 Mar 2017

The older generation joined pupils for a Grandparents’ Gardening Afternoon.

Adults and children worked together in the school allotment and other outdoor spaces on a number of tasks including making newspaper pots, planting assorted vegetable and flower seeds and tidying up ready for the new growing season.

Our school has a long tradition of offering gardening as an extracurricular activity for pupils and last year we won the prestigious Queen’s 90th Birthday and Platinum Prize in the Primary School Category of the Rugby in Bloom Awards.

Gardening Club organiser Mrs Liz Hopkin says:

“Outdoor activities are a wonderful opportunity for children to learn new skills in a different environment. It has been lovely to have so many grandparents in school working with their grandchildren, having fun and learning at the same time. We have had so much positive feedback from the adults who attended we are hoping that this can become a regular activity.”

Here are some of the replies to a question asking the grandparents what they enjoyed best about the event:

    • " Seeing the children enjoying the experience and relating to the environment."

    • Being with the children and enjoying their enjoyment."

    • Imparting knowledge to the children and having fun with my grandchild."

    • Spending time with my grandchildren in the school environment."

    • "Seeing how much the children enjoyed it."
  • FAMILY LEARNING DAY TO "MAKE YOUR LAUGH MATTER".

    Mon 27 Mar 2017

Parents and carers joined BLIS pupils in their classrooms for our “Make Your Laugh Matter” Family Learning Day on March 24th.

Adults and children worked together on a series of creative tasks and fun educational activities.

The regular events are organised to showcase the work being done in school and to encourage parents and carers to get involved with their child’s learning.

The next one is being held on Friday 16th June - just before Father’s Day. Details will be available nearer the time.

  • PUPILS SHOWN THE MAGIC OF SCIENCE

    Thu 16 Mar 2017

Giant bubbles, disappearing water and liquids that change colour have been used to enthral pupils during British Science Week this week.

Special assemblies featuring experiments have been held every day to the delight of children.

Head of Science Mrs Swan is passionate about her subject and hopes to instil a love of science in all pupils from an early age.

“My assemblies have been a cross between a scientific investigation and a magic show and there have been screams of delight and lots of laughter from the children. If they remember just one scientific fact from the demonstrations then it has been worthwhile,” she says.

Our school was one of three in the Rugby area to take part in The British Science Association’s Demo Day on 16th March.

“I thought why just a day, why not the whole week? So that’s what we’ve done and it’s been very successful. It has raised the profile of science in school and shown our young pupils what an exciting subject it is, “says Mrs Swan.

As well as special assemblies, the school organised year group activities using popular nursery rhymes to demonstrate aspects of science and a competition to encourage pupils to undertake their own experiments at home.

  • OFSTED PRAISE FOR OUR SUPPORTIVE SCHOOL WITH HAPPY PUPILS

    Thu 02 Mar 2017

Our pupils are “happy at school and enjoy their learning,” according to Ofsted.

A report just published rates the school as good and adds that pupils “behave exceptionally well in lessons and learn to concentrate very well from an early stage.”

Inspectors praise the school’s “vibrant environment which motivates pupils and supports their learning” and highlights the “innovative use of space and resources” - with a special mention for our London double decker bus converted into a library which is described in the report as “a shining example”.

Leaders and governors at Boughton Leigh Infant School are described as “outward looking and ambitious for the school to do as well as it can for its pupils.”

Inspectors judged teaching across the school to be good and acknowledged recently introduced new approaches to teaching phonics and mathematics.

The report highlights the “many ways” that the school promotes attendance and supports families experiencing difficulty getting their children to school regularly, but inspectors have said the school should “keep seeking new ways “ to reduce absence.

Head teacher, Andrew Moorcroft (pictured with Year 2 pupils) is delighted with the report and says it acknowledges the dedication of staff and governors who have worked tirelessly to address the areas identified for improvement after the school’s previous inspection in July 2012.

“We pride ourselves on being a forward-thinking school where children are happy learners and it is very pleasing to have this confirmed by Ofsted,” he says.

“It is our mission to ensure that all pupils make outstanding progress and achieve their potential and we are continually looking at new ways to make sure this happens,” he adds.
