Spring Term 1

Our topic for Spring Term 1 is 'Super Heroes'

This week in Mathematics we have been using the knowledge we have gained in division and multiplication to work out real life problems and recognising which operation (x ÷) to use. We have been looking at data handling and creating tally charts, pictograms and block graphs. We have been answering questions on the data for example; how many blue aliens were there? There are more green than red aliens, how many more? We have also worked in the computer suite to create pictograms and block graphs using 2 simple.

In English we have been continuing writing our non-chronological reports about hedgehogs, using headings, subheadings, and a glossary. We have been learning when to use a question mark and an exclamation mark.

In science following on from identifying the needs of humans and animals we have created super healthy living posters to promote eating healthy food and exercising more.

On Tuesday it was Safer Internet day. We were reminded about safe use on the internet.

This week the Handwriting award went to Raghav and our Learning Hero was Dylan he was a Billy Buddy.   Our attendance was 92.4% which is lower than our school target of 96.1%

We had a lovely assembly on Friday afternoon to wish Mrs. Gautrey good luck as she leaves school to have her baby.   We will miss her!

See you back in school after Half Term on Monday 22nd February.  Have a happy and safe holiday.

In Mathematics we have continued with division, using arrays and some have been working out remainders.  We have worked out word problems for division and multiplication.  Year 2 had their first times tables test on Friday.

In English we have been learning to use noun phrases in our writing (using an adjective to describe a noun) We have been looking at the features of non-fiction books (content, index, glossary, headings) and have began to write a report on Hedgehogs.

In History we have been comparing hospitals in the past (Florence Nightingales time) to hospitals today.  We used comparative language (however, where as, compared to) in our writing.

In Science we have been identifying the needs of humans and animals (air, water, food, care, warmth).

In PE the children have been dancing and posing as Super Heroes!

This week the Handwriting award went to Tahsin and our Learning Hero was Zoha who was a Charlie Challenge.   Our attendance was 96.2% which is higher than our school target of 96.1%   Well done Silver class!

In Mathematics we have been learning how to divide/share.  We have been halving numbers (dividing by 2) and we are learning to use the division symbol.  Some have moved onto division using the method of repeated subtraction on a number line.

In English we have been we have been sorting nouns and proper nouns and recognising that proper nouns (names of people and places) always have a capital letter.  We have also been identifying sentences using the correct tense.  We have created our own comic book adventures using the features of a comic strip, detailed illustration, speech bubbles, thought bubbles and onomatopoeia.  Some of the wonderful comic books will be put in class reading corners or even our Library bus!

In Science we have been identifying the needs and development of the human from baby to adult.

In History we have been researching facts about Florence Nightingale and recording this in a fact file. We have continued with our Powerpoints in ICT moving onto our next slide about Florence Nightingale.

This week the our Learning Hero was Finlay who was a Polly Planner.  Our attendance was 88.7% which is lower than our school target of 96.1%

This week in mathematics we have continued learning to work out multiplications by using practical equipment and drawing arrays. Year 2 have started working out multiplication on a number line using repeated addition.

In English we have been sorting words in to nouns (objects, places and names) adjectives (describing a noun) and verbs (action words). We have started a new book called Traction Man and

In our history lessons we have started looking at Florence Nightingale. We looked at evidence from photographs to give us clues as to what Florence may have done to make her such an important person in history.

In science following on from sorting animals in to carnivores, herbivores and omnivores we have been looking at simple food chains.

In the ICT suite we have been researching facts about Florence Nightingale on the internet. We have been learning to cut and paste in to a power point and change the text size and font.

This week the Handwriting award went to Eileena and our Learning Hero was Ruby who was a Charlie Challenge.  Our attendance was 92% which is lower than our school target of 96.1%

This week in mathematics we have been learning to work out multiplications by using practical equipment and drawing arrays. We have recorded multiplications as a repeated addition e.g. 3+3+3=9 or 3x3=9. We have been learning that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) e.g. 2x4=8 or 4x2=8.

In English we have continued with our story of The Man on the moon. We have created posters linked to the story, advertising tourist trips to the moon. We have also written postcards telling friends and family what a wonderful time we have had on our trip to the moon.

In our topic lessons we have been creating a piece of art based on space. We have used a variety of techniques ink, splatter paint, marbling, chalk, pastels and tissue. We have enjoyed looking at the different planets in our solar system and recreating them in our art work.

In the ICT suite we have been researching facts about Neil Armstrong on the internet. We have been learning to cut and paste in to a word document and change the text size and font.

This week the Handwriting award went to Sienna and our Learning Hero was Olivia Mc. who was a Polly Planner.  Our attendance was 93.6% which is lower than our school target of 96.1%

In Maths we have been learning to order numbers correctly, we have also been looking at the greater than and less than signs < > We  have learnt a good tip that the mouth of the crocodile will always go to the largest number.

In English we have all thoroughly enjoyed the story of 'The Man on the Moon'.  We particularly enjoyed receiving a letter from Bob (The man on the moon) and a copy of his book.  We drew some marvellous illustrations of the man on the moon, while we were explaining the setting, characters and events of the story.

We have started our new Topic on 'SuperHeroes' and the first heroes we are looking at are Time Peake and Neil Armstrong.  We have been asking some very interesting questions about Space and Planets.
