On Tuesday 7th June 2016 the month of Ramadan started. During Ramadan Muslims fast from dawn until sunset - that means eating nothing while it is daylight. Children, pregnant women, the sick, the elderly and travellers don't have to fast. The Qur'an, the holy book followed by Muslims, was first revealed during the month of Ramadan.
Mrs Sadiq showed us some traditional clothes and we looked at the Qur'an. She also explained Ramadan to us. Several of our friends in nursery are Muslim and their families celebrate Ramadan.

This term our topic is
In nursery we have lots of different activities going on this term to look at change and growing.
We have planted beans in plastic wallets with a wet paper towel and looked at them regularly to see what is happening. The children are very interested in this and have started to notice changes. This week we looked at the beans and drew observational pictures to show what has happened to the beans as they have grown. We have been looking at the roots, shoots, stalks and leaves which have grown.
We also have tadpoles in nursery which have grown from frogspawn in to tadpoles. Next they will grow legs to turn in to froglets before growing in to frogs. We have a 'tadpole' diary next to the tadpoles if you would like to see our observations.

Spring term 2016
Rhythm and rhyme
This term our theme is rhythm and rhyme. Rhyming skills are very important when your child is learning to read and spell. Children who know about rhyme often read easily and grasp spelling skills more quickly.
What are 'rhyming skills'?
It is important at this stage that when we say something rhymes it must rhyme exactly; we want children to listen for the precise sounds within words. Help them by repeating phrases such as, 'easy peasy, lemon squeezy' and 'see you later, alligator'.
If you have any further questions please ask Mrs Simons, Mrs Townsend or Mrs Carey for more information.
Today we had our Christmas party. We watched a film, played pass the parcel and musical statues, met Santa and got a present off him and had party food! We had a great day.

Learning journey sharing days
Mrs Simons, Mrs Townsend, Mrs Carey and Mrs Essam would all like to say a big thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to look at their child's learning journey with the children. I know that the children were excited to show you their work and we had lots of positive feedback from parents. Don't forget to fill out your WOW vouchers if your child achieves any of their next steps or for any learning that the children are doing at home.
The next learning journey share will be before Christmas but you are welcome to look at your child's book at any time.
This week the children have brought home some information about the phonics we have been learning at nursery. We have started teaching phonics following the Jolly Phonics programme. Each week we will learn a new letter sound, an action to represent these sounds as well as a song. It is important that the children learn the sound that the letters make (a as in ant, b as in ball,) as well as their names (a is ay, b is bee) as these sounds will help them when reading and writing.

For the past couple of weeks we have been working on our acting, regularly holding renditions of 'the 3 little pigs' and 'Goldilocks and the 3 bears'. The children have been acting and directing the plays.
In nursery we have been learning about the seasons. Children have been observing the changes in nursery garden, especially the leaves changing colour and falling off the trees. On Monday the children went on a leaf hunt. They brought the leaves back in to nursery. We have been looking at the shapes and colours in the art area, drawing the shape of the leaf then colour mixing poster paint in order to paint our leaves the correct colour.
Congratulations to Lily and Nathaniel for getting the handwriting award this week. Both have been working very hard to learn to write their own names.
