Our topic for Autumn Term 1 is 'The Great Fire of London'
This week in our topic work we have been naming and locating the countries in the United Kingdom and their capital cities. We have been researching facts about the capitals and have been looking at familiar landmarks in London.
In Maths we have been working on subtraction with objects, number lines and a 100 square. We have been looking at subtraction as find the difference and recognising that subtraction is the inverse of addition.
In English we have been learning to use adjectives to describe the character 'King of Tiny Things'. We have written a character profile describing his appearance and personality.
This week we have been continuing our topic on The Great Fire of London and have been looking at the suitability of materials. Why was wood and straw not a good material to make houses out of and which would be better. We have also looked at the suitability of materials for a veriety of everyday objects and describing their properties.
In English we have read the story 'The King of Tiny Things' which is by the same author as 'The Bog Baby'. We have been learning to write using adjectives.
In Maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We have looked at their properties, how many faces and shape of faces, how many corners (vertices) and the number of edges.
This week we have been continuing our topic on The Great Fire of London. We have been looking at an extract from Samuel Pepys Diary to find out about the Great Fire.
In Science we have been comparing the suitability of a variety of every day materials and looking at which materials are manmade and which are natural.
In English we have been writing a chronological report of The Great Fire of London using time related vocabulary - first, next, then and finally.
In Maths we have been recognising and naming 2D shapes and describing the properties (number of sides and corners). We have also been learning to draw 2D shapes using straight lines.
On Friday we had a wonderful Harvest Festival at Christchurch. The children sang and spoke beautifully. Many thanks for the donations for the food bank.
This week we have been finding out about the Great Fire of London and the diary of Samuel Pepys. We have used the library bus to research about the topic. In Maths we have been learning about our number bonds to 10, 20 and beyond. We have been learning about inverse operations and challenging ourselves to complete missing number sentences.
In English we have been writing sentences with capital letters, full stops and conjunctions about the Great Fire of London.
In Science we have been exploring materials and finding out what everyday objects are made of.
We have had a very creative week. In the afternoons we have been creating artwork based on the story of 'Bog Babies'. We have used paint, ink, pastels, tissue paper, chalk and crayon. On Wednesday we had a whole day creating materpieces for the hall based on famous artists. We thoroughly enjoyed creating our classs pieces using a variety of techniques.
In English we continued writing a retell of the story of the 'Bog Babies'. We have been working on using the correct punctuation in our writing. We have started our phonics lessons and have also been on the library bus. We will start to bring home library books next week.
In Maths we have been ordering numbers and using numicon, caterpillars, hundered squares and numberlines. Mrs.Cartwright's Maths group have been learning to add two 2 digit numbers to 100 using a hundred square and by partitioning into tens and units.
In Purple class the artist we chose for our class masterpiece was Kandinsky. Our attendance this week was 99% which is higher than our school target of 96.1%
We have really enjoyed our first week back and have settled in really well to our new classes.
In Maths this week we have been ordering numbers and seeing how far we can count. We have also been adding numbers using number lines and 100 squares.
In English we have listened to the story of 'Bog Babies'. We have been writing a retell of the story for our Bog Baby display. We have been thinking about the different settings and what the characters might be saying.
In the afternoons we have had a PE session which we really enjoyed. We have also been thinking about who our 'safe person' in school is if we are worried about anything. We have learnt what to do if we are worried and how it would make us feel.
